Nohegan 2006

Nohegan 2006 is an art making weekend inspired by both the Skowhegan School and the summer camp experience. This year it took place on July 7th - July 10th at McKinney State Falls Park. A Gallery exhibit of the same name, showcasing the work created at Nohegan, will take place at MASS Gallery on Friday, July 14th from 7 to 11pm.

Gallery Show Update: Great News - The folks at Refractions Arts have made it possible for us to have the MASS Gallery show on the evening of Friday, July 14th. Mark your calendars.
Overnight Campers: You will be getting an electronic information packet (in your e-mail) in the next week or so. Day Campers: Check back next week for the workshops and events schedule.
May 16th - UPDATE
The response to Nohegan has been swell. So far we are looking at about 30+ campers and 5 visiting critics (to be announced soon). Because everyone was so flexible in allowing extra people into the cabins (they will now house 6 people per, rather than the proposed 4) the fee has been reduced to $40. Please send your money in soon. If you need my mailing address again, e-mail me (Jill) at info@nohegan.org
Ways to participate if you don't want to join us in the cabins:
BE A DAY CAMPER: We have people signing up to come in and join us for the fun without spending the night. There is no fee to do this. You simply have to pay the park admission ($4 per person, per day) at the front gate. As soon as we have the workshops and events organized, I'll post them.
RENT A TENT SITE: Contact McKinney Falls and come on down with your tent. There are 81 campsites with electric and water hook ups (no more than 2 tents per site) for $16 per night. Again, no fee to participate in the daytime events. Book as soon as possible - they tell me they go quick.
JOIN US FOR THE SUNDAY BBQ: There will be a group BBQ outside the group shelter on Sunday, July 9th.Workshops will be held (see schedule above) and Art (in progress) will be avaialable for viewing.
All these events (and more!) will be finalized and posted by the end of June.
May 1st - BASIC INFORMATION
Nohegan will take place at McKinney Falls Sate Park from 2pm on Friday, July 7th to 2pm on Monday, July 10th. You may take part in all or some of Nohegan… but the price is the same for everyone. The park is approximately 30 minutes from central Austin. Note: we will be organizing a group field trip to attend the opening of the CRL show, "Making It: Alone" on Saturday, July 8th.
Admission is on a first come first serve basis. If you are a nice person who makes art and you get your money in on time, then you can come.
Participants will be encouraged to host an informal workshop of their choosing. This can be done by an individual or a group. It is not required, just suggested. Current workshops include polaroid photography, campfire cooking and yoga.
The four day event will culminate in a show of the same name at MASS Gallery in July. The opening will most likely take place on Wednesday, July 12th (alternate date 7/19). The show will feature work created at Nohegan.
Fees are $50 per person. This includes 3 nights/4 days shelter*, daily park admission, and use of a large "group hall" on Saturday and Sunday (group facility includes restrooms, folding tables and chairs, a full kitchen, including a sink, range and refrigerator, with a large grill and 4 picnic tables outside). Everything else is B.Y.O. There are groceries and restaurants nearby if you do not feel like "roughing" it. Please note: restroom facilities are separate - a short walk from the cabins.
*Shelters each have 4 sets of bunk beds (8 total beds). Bring your own bedding because their are no mattresses or bedding provided. Has a hot & cold water sink, ceiling fan, picnic table (inside and out) and one 15 amp duplex electrical outlet. Cooking grill & fire ring are outside. Pets are not permitted in the area. No tents, RV's or trailers are allowed outside the shelters. If you want to rent a tent site ($12 - $16 a nite) refer to the McKinney Falls page.
Click here for a look at campground and "screened shelters". Each shelter will hold 4 people and you will have two bunks per person (one for your stuff and one for sleeping). Please note that you must bring your own bedding. Yes, you may request your cabin mates. You may bring two vehicles per shelter. Each cabin will have a designated contact person or "C.I.T.". Each group will be responsible for naming their cabin.
Suggested Dress: "Meatballs" and "Little Darlings" chic… jean cut-offs, muscle tees, tube socks, tube tops, running shoes, lip gloss, short shorts, overalls, cropped mesh jerseys, virginal night gowns, ringer tees, rainbow flip flops, leotards as tops, hippie sundresses, dr. scholls, stripey bathing suits, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: FEES ARE DUE NO LATER THAN JUNE 10TH!
E-mail me your name (and your friends) and I'll let you know if there is space left and where to send the payment.
