2008 Workshops
Temple of Craft (ongoing)
Nohegan's longstanding relationship with crafting will not be denied! This year, there will be a permenant area set-up in the Group Hall where one can craft away to their hearts content as well as exchange supplies and tools that have been sitting around their houses taking up valuable space. Please plan to donate/barter if you can. Scraps of fabric, crappy tempera, glitter, rivets, tape, those jokey socks you never wear... it's all viable. All leftovers will be kept for next year.
Learn to Play the B-Side of Abbey Road w/ Sam
Gain access to the complete score and learn to play (with optional assistance from Sam). Play alone or in groups. Two guitars and a mandolin available for lend.
Mutant Stop-Motion Animation w/ David
Create small creatures that inhabit McKinney Falls. After creating animals from tiny armatures (that will be provided) and complete junk and hot glue, we will go into nature and shoot a stop-motion nature film. I will provide the knowledge, the camera and the tripod as well as hot glue guns. You can bring a camera as well. We can combine the footage and I will edit a Nohegan Nature Film.
Customized Coozies w/ Josh
Join Josh on opening night for some jot glue, foam rubber, colors, and decorative elements. Hide your bevie in style all-weekend long.
Finding and Creating Your Balloon Animal Spirit Guide w/ Elaine
After a brief introduction to types of Animal Spirit Guides, and a quick Balloon Animal Making demonstration, participants will meditate on, and be guided into creating an image of their Spirit Guide through the sacred art of Balloon Animals.
Balloons will be provided. Just bring a clear mind, and a desire to meet your "lifelong powerful spiritual friend."
To prepare yourself for the journey, you can find more information about Animal Spirit Guides here: http://www.manataka.org/page291.html#INTRODUCTION
The Ongoing Workshop w/ Sean
Propose fresh, on the spot ideas for "workshops" that were not conceived pre-nohegan. Including, but in no way limited to: improvisational activities, silent-time, trouble-making, or doing that other workshop you think no one will participate in. Bring whatever is needed/unneeded to Cabin 1.
MORE MONKEY BUSINESS (tree-climbing workshops) w/ Sean
Discover/re-discover the serenity and art of tree climbing. Get back to your baser instincts by spending some time in the tree tops climbing, hanging [literally], and creating art. Bring some art supplies, rope, your hands, feet, and a sense of balance. No dendrophiliacs please [that means you hippie!]. Climb at your own risk.
Sunprints (cyanotypes) w/ Brooksy
Bring your favorite small objects to this workshop... from home or the woods of Nohegan. With light-sensitive paper, make a positive/negative photograph without using a camera.
Mad Libs Poetry w/ Brooksy
You say you want to be a poet that rhymes?
But you wrote better poems when you had more time?
Like when you were 10 and everything was new?
And feelings were fresh like the morning dew?
Write a poem for someone who is "more than a friend"
Then hope that they like you or you'll just die.
Drawing from Memory w/ Carlos
Remember how to draw ALF, or Captain Planet, or Lou Diamond Philips? Me Neither! Let's give it a shot though! Come draw things that you only kind of remember! It'll be fun, promise. I'll bring the paper and markers.
Calls of the Wild: Adventures in Vocalization w/ Amanda
Use your voice for something other than complaining or boasting! Listen to prerecorded audio samples of voices, noises, and sounds and try your hand at imitation. Share your best celebrity impersonation, animal impression, or ridiculous laugh. Exchange tips with the group and receive individual instruction from me, (Amanda Joy) the Mistress of Vocal Possibility. AKA Sit around and make weird noises at each other and record them! Best Cosby wins a prize!!
The Ultimate Collaboration (Makin Babies) w/ Laura
Find a partner to collaborate with and create an infant child sculpture together! Each partner should give the child sculpture aspects of themselves: physical characteristics, personality, habits, health problems, attitude, cultural perspective, smells and anything else one inherits from their parents. You may want to bring personal items that represent what you could potentially pass on to this new person. Ill bring some stuff too. BTW - The assignment is not to ACTUALLY procreate.
Le Fun Globes w/ Le Fun Bun
Re-purpose your old salsa jars and beat the heat by making your very own custom-made, cool, cool, COOL snowglobe. An empty jar, a plastic dinosaur, aquariam glue, and a butt-on of glitter are all you need to make your very own pocket wonderland. Materials are provided, but if you have a favorite plastic gorilla friend, bring him along to camp!
*Editors note: Jo-Jo's globes were all the rage of Nohegan '06... this workshop is not to be missed!
Art Career Counseling w/ Nancy
Nancy, Nohegan's Operations Manager and official "artist whisperer" will counsel you in various art-related matters. No issue too small. No problem too large.
Texas Hold'em w/ Bob
Fairly self-explanatory. Will occur into the wee hours, usually in the vacinity of cabin one (aka Kenny Rogers is the Gambler: The Cabin). All levels welcome.
Make a Dream Guide / Zine to Follow w/ Lisa
You will need: 1 or more old photographs of someone who looks dang mysterious. Photos from early 1900s are good. You can usually find them at antique shops. (I will bring a few in case someone forgets or doesn't have time to find one) It can be whatever size you want. You will need supplies to transform this person into a Dream Guide... like acrylic paint, (tiny brushes!), fabric, glue, glitter, graphite or whatever you'd like. I will try to share what I have.
Dream Guides are the people we see in our dreams but that don't really exist...
here and here are some examples of ones I've made.
After Nohegan, I would like to take all the dream guides home to scan them for a zine. I will put your names and whatever info you'd like in the back of the zine (like websites, shout outs, whatev') I will then mail your dream guide along with a zine back to you. If you can chip in a dollar or something to cover shipping cost that would be great, but no pressure.
I plan on selling this zine (with your permission of course) at DOMY BOOKS, in Houston & Austin. They will be sold at whatever they cost me out of pocket. (but you'll get one free for participating!) If you don't want to participate in the zine but still want to make a dream guide... that's no problem.
Domy is a progressive bookstore with a focus on editioned books, periodicals, video, and product lines that concentrate on national and international contemporary art and culture. http://www.domystore.com
